My dad always mixed some sand into the area where we planted carrots. Mine didn't grow in our regular dirt because it was too compacted for the carrots to form. However, I do recall the failed attempts at growth looking rather weedy before they became carrot-top looking. We had wonderful green tops and then these pale stringy carrots when we pulled them. :(

I'm having crazy visions of going to the farmer's market this weekend, buying plants in progress, and putting them somewhere in my new yard. Probably a little more planning and/or forethought would be good here.
