California was practically 60/40 for Obama, yet it appears that the hateful prop 8 (ban on gay marriage) passed ( Read more... )

If I could have voted yes, I would have. Unfortunately, we're not even as far as it being on the ballot here. I'm very glad Obama won, I actually have a friend who is as right wing crazy conservative christian as you can get and she used the argument that Obama is faking his Christianity to mislead people, that he has terrorist ties, that he wants to institute socialism and bla bla bla...I got really sick of her posting bulletins in the couple of days before the election. I'm just glad that prop 2 for stem cell research passed here. Yesterday was a pretty happy day politically for me. I just hope people don't think that Obama can magically change the economy with a snap of his fingers and then get mad when he can't fix it in one term.

You mean voted "no"? A yes vote was approving the ban; a no vote was rejecting the proposed ban.

I think all politicians play up their religiosity factor/piousness to some degree-- it's a marketing ploy to sell their good character and "values." I wish we were like Europe in the sense that people don't give a shit what you worship because it's irrelevant to how well you do your job as a public servant and elected official in a secular state.

People who rail on the "evils" of socialism probably don't know what it is. I like how Stephen Colbert actually had the official Socialist candidate go on his show and say what socialism actually means.

But yeah, the whole religion + politics thing makes me sick. I hate that politicians have to play it up because it's important to so many potential voters, and I hate how people are trying their darnedest to make this country a theocracy.

Yea, I did mean vote no...sorry I didn't know exactly what the proposal stated until today. I hate that people care so much about the religion of the president...it shouldn't matter. I couldn't care less what the religion of the president is, I guess I'd prefer that they are not religious because then religion couldn't leak into the laws. Most people don't know what socialism is, and that's sad. One of the things the girl I used to be friends with said was that Obama reminded her of Hitler...but didn't really provide an explanation. I'm just glad things turned out the way they did on the national level. I'm surprised that a ban on gay marriage in california passed, that seems very strange to me. It sucks that it is even an issue to be voted on, that's part of religion getting into goverment...

Ugh that is annoying. It gripes me when peoples basic civil rights end up on a ballot in the first place, let alone when they get taken away. Good news is that in South Dakota, their ban on abortion was voted down. Actually all anti choice proposals were voted down. YAY!

Steve Colbert is the shiiiiit.
