Why is going commando called going commando?

I mean, surely it's not a good idea to be a commando and not wear any undies.

I know! It's a bit of a curly one eh? Surely armed forces people don't go out without undies on. That's just silly.

Yes it is silly, a lot of armed forces are men. Armed forces involves running, and running without "support" is just plain uncomfortable.

I reckon that it's because you just don't have time to do laundry out in the big bad jungle, what with all the killing and camouflaging so you know, if you can't have clean underwear, hell, why not just flag and go bare.

Yup. That's gotta be it.
