I like these 2 cents! If WGPO really were like that in comparison to NASPA, then I would be far more likely to play in something WGPO sets up.

i was thinking the other way around -- let wgpo (or whomever) handle recreational tournaments, allowing naspa to focus on more competitive ones. i know the whole pro vs amateur thing has been discussed before, but maybe it deserves a more rational and in-depth look.

tournament scrabble is older than i am, but i have been told (by frank) that scrabble tournaments used to all be single-division events. over time, the divisions evolved -- i don't know how or when, but i do know that it leads to a lot of disagreements. maybe it's time we stop demanding that people with different goals should want the same thing. it's holding scrabble back, and has been for a long time. we can't attract new players to a community in such disarray.

the 2nd group sounds fun, the first one sounds lame. I will take group two ;)

None of these groups are ideal for me. I mean, I like divisions (you get to play against people roughly on your level to a greater extent than in opens), but I don't like obnoxiously ostentatious venues. I like Collins (because I like learning new words!) but I also like round robins (they're less likely to leave performance mismatched with overall record, especially in tournaments shorter than Nationals ( ... )
