So here's the whole story. I was at the bus stop on 12th and Broadway in downtown Oakland. There was guy there harassing a chick waiting for the bus. I told him to leave her alone in a more colorful language. He got in my face, grabbed my shirt and tried to stare me down. I am so sorry that you went through that. You tried to do the right thing by standing up for that woman and yet, you never know what kind of a person you're up against... Thank God he backed off.

With all the shit going down with the economy and with Oakland in particular, I worry that these types of things are going to happen more and more often. I think we are going to have to be more and more vigilant, despite how paranoid it makes us. I'm planning on buying some portable mace since I'm moving back to the city and will be taking Muni much more often now...

I hope you feel better soon. Get some rest and allow yourself to relax for a few days.

Mace/pepper spray is a terrible form of self defense. Hard to deploy, hard to control, and no guarantee that it will disable an attacker... Just my .02 but take a minute to think about how much worse a situation can escalate once you've aggravated your attacker.
