I like the way you give us Clark's temptation to cut through all the crap in this world. It certainly must be something he thinks about, and it depresses him because he crosses the line, he can't accomplish it. He'd become a benevolent dictator, but still a dictator. I like Bruce's understanding and his image of the Man Who Never Sleeps.

Thanks for the feedback. I was into writing some "Dark Clark" and I've always felt like this must be a great temptation for him--to just let loose and laws-be-damned. I like to think that being in love with Bruce would make it even harder for him, because he sees so intimately what the results of crime can be in a person's life. And Clark knows his temptations. That's one reason Bruce has the Kryptonite ring.

It's why Bruce was wary of him at first! All that power must be very tempting, and whether the nature is human or Kryptonian, it's dangerous!

Very good fic!

Thank you--I tried to put some sweetness in there to balance out the angst.

This was...*sighs with a mix of happiness and sadness*...beautiful and complicated and full of lovely subtle shading, just like the lighting in the room I can see in my mind's eye.

Yes, he could do it. Make the world in his own likeness. Cut through the tangle of impotent laws and bring simplicity, unity, peace.

I love how simple and tempting you make the desire, how easy we imagine it would be for a moment to give in and remake the world. The strength and beauty of Superman is not that he doesn't have such thoughts, but that he sees them for the snares they are and fights them. You captured the struggle beautifully here.

The man behind his eyelids is pure palest gold, unmarred by the lacework of silver scars that Clark knows he'll see if he looks at him in truth.

This line especially has a lucent beauty that jumped out at me, but all of it has a wonderful rhythm, the thoughtful rhythm of the mind wandering places you don't want it to on too little sleep...

Thanks for the feedback, Jen. I was kind-of going for a mix of sadness with a bit of happiness to round it out. I agree that the appeal of Superman isn't that he's too much of a good guy to have those urges, but that he doesn't give into them. I always thought of Superman as a complex character, with a darker streak than he's usually given credit for. You couldn't possibly have all those powers and have a conscience and not be tempted to take over the world. It's a credit to the Kents' upbringing that he doesn't.

Even though the world doesn't know it, the world owes the Kents a really big debt.

Cycnus39 wrote a great story called "Productive Reasoning" (which I would link to if I could figure out how to put html links in this comment, which I haven't yet, but it was posted to WF on 5/4). Anyway, that story has a great line about how Bruce "loathed the man Clark would have become if it wasn't for the Kents." Yes, the world owes the Kents a huge debt.
