The Addiction That Is GoodReads. Do you use it? Love it? Hate it?

I’ve only recently started keeping track of the books I read. I signed up at GoodReads in February of 2008. Since then, I’ve rated and reviewed every single book I’ve read. My reviews are by no means professionally written* - they’re really just thoughts to remind me of what I liked or didn’t like - but I absolutely love GoodReads. I love ( Read more... )

Well, I threw off the curve, since I don't have a Goodreads account.

I'm of two minds on Goodreads. I'd love to keep track of what I've read and what's in the queue, but I also don't like to post reviews of my own. If someone asks me, I'll give them an opinion, but I don't like to post reviews out there for general consumption. People don't know me or my tastes, and I don't know theirs.

Interesting. You don't want people to know your opinion? Or, you don't want them to misinterpret your opinion since they don't know you?

The latter, with a dose of "I don't know what you like, so I can't really say if this book will work for you."

I tend to have broad tastes and am open to trying out a new genre, so I know that people might misinterpret any review as a "oh, that's just Mike being nice to everyone", rather than an acknoledgement that I can accommodate a pretty broad spectrum in my reading habit.

Looks like you're almost evenly split, with most question 3 yes and 3 no. For the last one, I'm not sure that a review has actually pushed me over the edge to BUY a book, but it most certainly has to BORROW one, whether from you or the library. :-)

You know those emails that go out that show what your friends are reading? Whenever I see a book show up a whole lot on that list, even if people are just adding it to their to-read list, I become REALLY interested in buying it. I totally think this is a new form of peer pressure. LOL

Don't have a Goodreads account. Hope this gives you the answers you're looking for;).

And you're not tempted to get one?

Hm, not really. I read so much for work and enjoyment and I spend too much time on the internet already. If I had such an account I probably wouldn't get anything done;). It's something else I need to keep up...

I'm mostly using goodreads to keep track of how many books I read in a year... I'm on it if you want to friend me. If we're not already friends... phoenixfirewolf at gmail

Oh, that's what I love about it, too. I have no idea how many books a year I was reading before I started keeping track in 2008. I read 50 last year. My goal is 50 again this year, but I'm only at 35 right now. So far behind!

I'm at 45 done right now, I'm hoping to hit 50 too. I never knew before. :)

Yeah, but you've got this editing thing to work on. I think we'll forgive you if you can't match 50 this year.

heh Most of mine aren't long and thoughtful, but I'm pretty good at getting most of my impressions in there. I've started typing up my reviews at work. Since I'm a librarian, I figure that should be included in my job description. :-)
