Philz Coffee in San Francisco. There are a couple of branches. I really enjoy the mint mojito coffee, but they have something for everyone.

seconded. philz is amazing. there are several locations thruout the city.

to the OP: how long do you have here, and what other kinds of things do you like to do. do you prefer free to non-free? we need more guidance!

I have through Wednesday. It's not a lot and I'm not sure what all my family has planned but I'm sure I'll get out on my own for a day. I'm planning on finding some co-ops to check out as well. Bike shop maybe- I need a new water bottle, the airport security took mine back in Portland.

Go see the Long Now Foundation in Ft. Mason. It was one of the coolest things I saw when I was in SF last month.

I read about the clock on Laughing Squid. This looks so cool! Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the tip! Checked it out, it's pretty rad. Reminds me of that Buddhist practice of thinking 7 generations ahead. I really like what they are doing with the Rosetta project!!

Philz is drip-only; if you want espresso or espresso drinks, Blue Bottle is where it's at. (Though if you're used to Intelligentsia, Blue Bottle will just be competitive rather than mindblowingly good.) Also good: Sightglass, Four Barrel, Coffee Bar, Ritual. There are also a bunch of places that don't roast their own but are still good: Epicenter Cafe, The Creamery, Ma'velous, the Vega/Special Xtra/Grand Prix chain of kiosks, Farm/Table, Haus, et cetera ...

Would love to, but I'll be out of town RSN. When are you here?

I basically blew my wad in the comment above, though. I guess I didn't give the peninsula down-low:

Go to Barefoot. Srsly.

In Mountain View, Dana St Roasting Company has decent beans roasted in-house; Red Rock has a better vibe IMO but mediocre pulls last I checked. Palo Alto has Caffe del Doge which pulls amazing shots out of Italian beans that, unfortunately, have seen better days (they don't roast in-house AFAIK).

Have a nice visit!

Here now, sitting at Philz. Not bad coffee, but they didn't know what a peaberry bean was. I love peaberries, so fruity!! Haha, but I'm not a snob, just felt bad when I asked for it. *shrug* next time. I'm planning another visit with friends not family, it should be a little more fun.
