about breast pumps. what did you use and like/love/hate? really, all i'd need it for is an occasional pump. so i don't need anything super fancy or pricey but something that is easy and capable

i had bought this $25 evenflo manual pump that I LOVED. I still love it, and nobody here has ever really taken bottles, so who knows why we have it? It's awesome & I got it at kmart. It includes a bottle, so you just pump right into the bottle & then unscrew and put the lid on.
i used an Avent Isis manual breast pump. like... maybe all of 4 times!! but it wasn't bad, as far as breast pumping goes! i just never really needed to use it very much. i got it because it came highly recommended, wasn't too expensive (like $50? and it came with some bottles) and the bottles screw right onto the pump (so you are pumping directly into the bottles... they have a very wide neck too so if you freeze the milk in ice cube trays they will fit in the bottle cubed that way as well).
it's been a long long time since i stored breast milk, so hopefully if i am off someone will give you better info... but i think you can keep breast milk stored in the fridge for 24 hours. & any longer than that it should be frozen. i'm not sure how long you can keep it frozen for. :/

I rented the big blue hospital pump when I needed it -- before a trip, when she was diagnosed failure-to-thrive, that type thing. I think it was $25 for a month or something? not v much and it was easy to use. because you have to learn how to let down into the pump, you know.
anyhow, I'm spoiled so whatever ...
I would just pour it into the little bags and then freeze it with those bread clips on the top. and the milk you pump today is not good forever, you know, because they change, nutritionally or some shit. it keeps for 2 months in the freezer. (6m in the deep freeze!) but again, that's a long time ago. I used up a lot of frozen milk on baby cereal when solids came.
we used playtex nursers with silicone nipples. will Nate take a bottle? you should have probably started him some time ago. eh, he won't starve, but I'm asking because there's not a point to buying all this shit (bottles, nipples, pumping kits, etc) to feed a baby who will just wait resolutely for you to get home. like, mmmm, my elder child.
I borrowed a cheapy electric pump from a friend and HATED it. Oy, it sounded like a motor from an aquarium or something and it hurt to use. So then we rented the hospital pump, and while it wasn't my favorite thing ever, it was a good machine. It worked well, and it did not hurt, unless I put the suction cups on wrong. I bought an Avent Isis, but, I am very full breasted, and the "petal" insert thing hurt me like crazy. Without that, my Isis wouldn't work. I think it may have been defective, but I couldn't return it because I bought it from Burlington Coat Factory's Baby Depot.
I've heard a lot of great reviews of the Avent Isis, but my recommendation would be to buy it from maybe a lactation center or something in case there is a problem, and then you would be able to return it.
I stored my milk in bottles, wrote the date on them, and popped them in the freezer. I think I was told at the time that it was good for six months if frozen immediately after pumping.
i had the aven manual pump also but t didn't work weel for me, partly because my nipples are enormous and they barely fit in the pump. glad you asked?? but what i did pump i put into the sealed plastic bags and into the fridge or freezer. for frozen breast milk, don't use a microwave to defrost it, it kills all the good stuff. i am hoping to get the medela electric or rent a hospital pump when i go back to work in the fall.
