020 - Mother's day?

May 10, 2009 23:26

I believe this culture has the silliest holidays I have ever had the displeasure of learning about. A day dedicated to motherhood and mothers? Is this culture so disrespectful of their parents that they specifically have created days set aside for which to pretend they care and love them? Are parents here that despicable? Are parents so horrible ( Read more... )

I never quiet understood it either. But I always used it as an excuse to escape everything for the day and spend it by her grave just talking to her.

But this has me curious about something. One moment I need to check my books...

Okay so... it was a tradition created in the early 20th century... "One school of thought claims this day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece, which kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods."

Okay so a holiday derived from one in ancient times, that makes a little more sense.

I suppose it does. Yet, it still does not help the fact that, like "Valentine's Day", it seems like just one granted day a year where a major loved one gets any attention at all.

Perhaps I am still not used to traditions and culture here.

Well it seems like all of the silly holidays derived from a greater one in the past and it has just grown frivilous and pointless over time.

Indeed. I would say I am all for culture continuing to pay little mind to such "special days" and have the days lose their worth... but it seems like the culture is too busy, or too high-minded to pay attention to anyone other than these designated "special days".

I truly believe that if it wasn't for Mother's Day or Valentine's Day, significant others and those who gave birth to us would suffer a whole three hundred and sixty five days with nothing to show they are appreciated and loved...

I don't know how it is with other people, but I have a deep respect for my mum, and I try to show her and Father that I love both of them every day. Mother's Day is merely a day in which we set aside to celebrate everything all mothers do for us. It's like an extra birthday for the ones we love and cherish most.

I suppose for some it is merely a day to heap the love and respect on the respective parent or person... but I find it is usually the one day they ever get any thank yous or love or anything of that manner.
