One Piece 38

Feb 22, 2014 12:53

This might be a little premature, because I'm not sure if mangaroo has had a chance to read 37 yet, but having finished a draft of 39, I'm starting to lose track of where I am. So, here is 38 for all my Monday morning commenters.

Absolutely do not wait for me! I have 37-39, so letting you get a bit ahead in posting works well for me. (I I haven't read the books yet because I do my reading lately in bed at night and the condition of the library books is too gross to bring to the bedroom. Gah. 12-year-old boys! But I plan to read 37 today, once I figure out my other priorities.)

Yay! I'll try to have 39 ready to go any time if you end up wanting to jump ahead to discussion of that volume.

Gross library books make the reading rabbit sad. :-(

I almost forgot to put my comment at the end!

Some thoughts (very much the long way round) on Sanji's "it's a man's job to forgive women when they lie" line:

It occurred to me (this is relevant, I promise) that one of the things I really love about this couple of volumes is how different each crew member's reaction to Robin leaving is, and what that tells you about their character.

Luffy just flat-out won't believe it, and keeps pushing and pushing until he gets an answer that satisfies him (much as he refused to even contemplate the idea of Nami not being their navigator).

I think I had a discussion earlier with serrende earlier about how I don't see Zoro as being closed off from his own emotions. However, I do think that when he's under stress or has a difficult decision to make, he tends to push his emotions aside and apply strict principles of logic and ethics. In Myers-Briggs terms, he's a classic T (as opposed to an F), using logic and a code of principle to make decisions, rather than relying on intuition, sentiment or compassion. ( ... )

This is such a good PS I want to rec it all over. I almost wish it was on Tumblr so I could reblog it! (But generally I muuuuuch prefer journal space for discussion! It's so hard to follow anything on Tumblr even when there's just a few people involved.)

Aw, thank you! I had fun trying to puzzle it out in my head.

I have never managed to figure Tumblr out. It's so confusing to me. But hey, feel free to link these posts around if you want - it's always nice to have more fans weighing in. I leave them public for that reason.

I just posted this! Let me know if anything seems amiss in it and I'll edit.

I don't have loads of followers, though, and haven't had much luck trying to drag fans back to LJ before. Still, worth a shot! (Maybe I'll make a second one later.)

[Never mind me! Just correcting an old mistake I didn't even realise until this super-late revisit of your splendid posts, go me.]

If the Klabautermann talk with Franky and Usopp last volume offered a small respite of relief in the heavy darkness, here is where things finally start to feel more hopeful and right again.

Back at Galley-La, Iceberg recovers consciousness [mouse!], and asks to speak with Nami alone.

Here comes the true turning point - knowing of Robin's true intentions, like Nami says now they can go after her wholeheartedly. The fog of confusion is gone: now things will be hard, but they know they will charge ahead.

[Such a lovely, lovely frame. Nami so often puts on a tough face and shows the less-pleasant sides of her personality that these moments of genuine vulnerability are rare. It wasn't until this point that I realized how upset she really was about Robin leaving. She still tends to bottle things up and hide them from everyone.]Yeah. And her reaction helped underline how big a deal Iceburg's revelation was, too. It struck exactly the right tone as well as being a perfect bit of characterisation - another perfect bit is the one later on ( ... )

Very true, although interestingly, I don't think 37 got me down as much as it does you, even though you're not wrong about all the gloom. I think it's because I love the flashback parts so much, tragic though it is. Tom's Workers are one of my all-time favorite One Piece "families."

Luffy's been grim since Usopp left the crew, but finding out the truth about Robin is such an emotional relief to him that he can laugh and smile again.

Yes! I think I noticed earlier that he was able to smile a little bit (I forget at what?), but there is definitely a huge lightening of his mood from this point on.

What does meiwaku mean? Trouble?

Yes, sorry, I have a bad habit of forgetting to translate Japanese. meiwaku is trouble of any kind, but especially trouble that a person causes to other people. Upsetting someone, inconveniencing them, needing a favor ( ... )

Ahh, yeah, come to think of it, the flashback helped too. I think I was focusing too much of the CP9 confrontation at Iceburg's place, where it was hard to see any glimmer of light as it happened. (Even Iceburg himself probably didn't feel any hope at Robin's confession that only he knew about in the last volume: I think he just felt he needed to clear Robin's name when speaking to Nami - that it would be hopeless for the Strawhats to try getting her back. But seeing Nami's resolve and her faith in her crewmates made him get back up and start his own brand of helping - and thank Oda he did!)

ETA: And thank you very much for the meiwaku explanation! It makes sense with the way Sanji spoke in context, too. But man, now I'm sad again thinking of Usopp's feelings when he left the crew. ;__; I - I know I shouldn't, but somehow I wish Sanji had worded things a little different, a little softer, even if it's just words. [volume 43]But I love Sanji forever for being what I think is the only one in this whole arc to call Usopp an asset, not a burden - ... )

I agree, I wish Sanji's words toward Usopp were a little softer, but I also think there's a ton of hurt there. Although I see them more as brothers/pals than in shippy terms, I think Usopp's desertion actually hurt Sanji far worse than Robin's did, perhaps because he never saw it coming.

He seems to soften a lot as soon as Sogeking puts the mask on, presumably because from that point on he knows that Usopp hasn't walked away from them in his heart, even if he still needs time to find his way back to the crew. (The scene where Usopp initially refuses to help is so, so painful.)

[Kind of like if Sawako from Kimi ni Todoke was a six-foot-tall zombie. And a marine captain. I think I might love T-Bone.]

Y-You're right!! HOW DID I NEVER SEE THIS BEFORE. :DD

T-bone is so great and unexpected.

(He crushes the receiver in his hand. I hope that doesn't hurt the den-den mushi, poor thing.)

I believe there was a reassuring SBS reply on that issue!

[Sogeking (slightly spoilery)](No real reason to make that a cut, except it fits - the cut is stylish, like his cape!)

Usopp gets so creative when his back is against the wall. Here his solution has the potential to kill three birds with one stone. There's his fear of fighting against the World Government itself and become a target for them; arguably, he also fears freezing up in battle and failing because of his fear, but that might be me reading more into it than is there.

Then there's the awkwardness/arguable loss of face in openly joining up with the Strawhats and particularly Luffy again - he already looks guilty to me when talking about him, but even if his pride didn't still hold him back

Well, I'm devastated the mouse was neither a vengeance mouse nor a rescue mouse, but i am so proud of Chopper!

Clearly the mouse needs to go through a training arc story first and then seek out his vengeance.

Chopper is the best!!

Now this makes me very curious: do we see the mouse after the time skip?
