that does suck....but...it isn't unexpected, in all forms of journalism, there exists editing and drafts

Editing and drafts, yes. But someone reworded her commentary, even adding grammatic errors.

Although there are a lot less commas in the edited piece, which I kind of agree with (despite my comma fetish)

my mother gets edited all the time, and it changes facts sometimes. welcome to writing for a paper.

I'd be infuriated. It looks like someone printed out your original draft, handed it to an 80-year old typist who has advanced Parkinsons, and asked her to transcribe it. They could have just added a couple bold tags and moved on.
