My New Year's resolution is to give money to a charity that works with homeless people. The charity I'm going to give to is the Dublin Simon Community (www.dubsimon.ieOn its own, my donation won't make much of a difference. So, I'd like as many people as possible to make a donation each month to a homelessness charity of their choice ( Read more... )

Do you accept back dated donations? I've been giving £10 (~€0.03) a month to Shelter for the last couple of years. They aren't just dealing with homelessness but general tenancy rights, and housing issues in general.

I've been thinking about this... I suppose I'm really more interested in new money, but I'll take these sorts of cases into account to some degree, provided they're not the majority. If I got to eight without, and there were four more like yours, I'd bump my total count to the ten threshold.

If you were to post a link to my post, I'm push this from a "maybe" to a "definitely" for you.

Oh, and I know Sterling's down a lot, but I think £10 is worth a little more than 3 cent!

Well, I do agree with you - there's not much point unless it's new money. I'm going to have a look at the London homeless charities and see what I can do.

One post coming up.

The very IDEA of a PD doing something to make the world a better place is novel enough that I'll see what I can do.

Once the party decided to shut down I was freed from the blood oath to strike down the poor. :)

Okey, based on http://www.charitywatch.org/toprated.html#homeless, the Bowery Residents Committee is a good choice (they're New York-wide, not just the Bowery). If my esteemed employers have them registered for donation matching, I'll give $100 per month, and the big G will match it. If they're not listed, I'll pick a homelessness charity that is. Thanks for the impetus to do something I should already have been doing.

I registered the organisation, and made the first month's donation. Once the G comes back and agrees that it's not a cover for the mob or whatever, I'll do it again but check the 'monthly' box.

For that sort of money, yes, that does indeed make you a person! (Does the Big G that you work for match that?)

Thanks, and Happy New Year.

Hey,

I give to Fr Peter McVerry which I consider to be a homelessness charity, although you may not and within work we have close connections with the Cappuchin Day Centre which I also consider to be a homelessness charity. I don't currently give monthly but I'd say I give quarterly. At the moment I'm not willing to change this to a more formal situation.

I applaud your decision, if you wish to count me towards your goal I can only be delighted.
