The announcement game out of the blue, at the dinner table, during what was until that point a completely uneventful meal. Sasha paused, then looked over at Phoenix, who had seemed startled that he had said anything aloud. "Not to...rain on this triumph here," she started carefully. "But..what is it you're going to do?"
Phoenix smiled shyly, and reached for his long blond hair, which reached his waist and was neatly tied into a ponytail, giving it a demonstrative tug. "I'm going to cut it."
Skye dropped her fork in surprise. "What? Why would you do that?" she demanded, being not-so-discreet with her dismay that Phoenix had decided to get rid of his pretty, soft, blond hair. "It's so pretty! And you get to take good care of it now!"
"All good reasons," Phoenix replied, smiling embarassedly as he brushed back the silver-dyed section of hair that covered his left eye. "But this is a new start here for me, you know? And I want to ... do something that signifies that. A tattoo came to mind, but that's more of a statement than I'm comfortable making. The only reason my hair is long is that I was too poor to cut it and I had other things on my mind ... like trying to survive." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I want to cut it, and make a fresh start. I don't know how much, though..."
"As long as you don't go bald, I don't think it'll shake anyone's world to the ground," Rick interjected, in between hurried mouthfuls.
Sasha hummed thoughtfully, reaching over to lightly place a finger just at Phoenix's shoulder. "Right here. Maybe layer it a little bit.. jaggedly, maybe? Mm.. that'd look really nice on you."
Phoenix blinked slowly. "You ... really think so?" He blushed slightly as Sasha's finger gently poked his cheek, lingering longer than was perhaps necessary. "A-All right. That sounds good. -- Will you come with me?"
"All of us? Isn't that a little much just for a haircut?" Rick questioned, grunting when Skye jabbed him in the gut with an elbow.
"He was asking Sasha you knob," she admonished. "Who's a lucky bitch.."
Sasha waved a hand. "Yes, yes, I know, I'm a damn hussy." She smiled at Phoenix though, hoping to look assuring. "Of course I'll come with you. It's important! At least you know the value of a haircut, which is something I can't say for somebody else at this table."
Rick balked, and sputtered at the indignity he was being given. "Excuse me? I go for haircuts! Regularly, even!"
His sister snorted. "Only when Mom strong-arms you into it. If we left you alone, you'd look like Cousin It."
Phoenix smiled to himself as he watched the siblings bicker, while Skye sighed heavily, valiantly attempting to keep herself out of this kind of foolishness, though they all knew she enjoyed taking part herself. These three people were becoming increasingly important people to him, and he had thought, not that long ago, that he wouldn't ever be lucky enough to meet a person he could trust enough to count on. Now he had three! He gave himself a little pinch, wondering if he was dreaming. "Ow," he murmured, rubbing his arm. "I guess this is really happening."
"It's just a haircut!" Rick interrupted, clearly not realizing that what he was talking about and what Phoenix was talking about were two completely different things.
"Ah? Oh ... ha ha .. yeah ... it's just a haircut," Phoenix stammered sheepishly, trying to play along, and failing, miserably. (I have a lot to learn, though...^_^; )
