It's unbelieveable that auto workers make that amount of money for just screwing a screw into a dashboard, mounting a steering wheel, installing a headlight, etc. Don't they also get like 75% of their wages if they're out of work?

Lets not forget that is total compensation, that includes things like health care etc.

They don't actually get all that money as salary... it's only that high because some analysts include all the costs of benefits to every single retiree as well as the salary and benefits of the active workers. Without the retirees its about $42/hour, and without the benefits at all (in other words, just the base cash salary) it is about $28/hour.

That's still a hell of a lot better than the $8 an hour I average from self-employment, with zero benefits other than the freedom to make my own schedule. I know, apples and oranges and all that, but still...
