I personally have been particularly frustrated by the recent solar minimum. I can only remember one day in the past few months when the sun spot number has exceeded 20. Bleah.

Sunspots are largely responsible for ionizing the D and F layers of the ionosphere, which are in turn responsible for world-wide propagation of high-frequency radio waves.

It's a lot easier to talk to far-away places like Germany or Japan (or even Utah) on my ham radio gear if the ionosphere bounces my signals back to earth.
