Last month, a friend of my parents had been admitted to the hospital to undergo surgery. The docs opened him up… and then closed him back again. There was nothing they could do to save him. Afterwards, they told him he had only a couple of weeks left to live.

I had a near death experience 15 years ago, one that unfolded in slow motion over the course of a few months, from midsummer well into the holiday/Xmas season. For the most part, I came out of that experience understanding that whole "live every day as if it were your last" thing on a very deep level, down to the nonverbal, pure experience level. But that concept of how to spend one's last week or two when he knows the end is near? that is awesome. I'm kind of surprised that I've never considered conducting myself that way if I were to see my death coming like that, which surprises me. Takes a lot to surprise me anymore, so that's a big deal to me ( ... )
