Trek vs. Wars

Brion: Star Trek is better, no bones about it.
Me: You sir, are high out of your mind. Trek's ok, but it's so campy. In SW, there's wars in the stars. THAT'S AWESOME ( Read more... )

I enjoy some Spock. But I'll take Wars over Trek any day.

Well, well well. I have some common ground with Brion it seems.
Star Trek has better character development and a logical plot. Star "trek" is more about a journey (through space, and one of personal discovery). Star "wars" is about one side fighting another side for one forseable reason or another, one side is obviously bad while the other is obviously good. Boring. So very boring.

So you have space wizards in the past future fighting with raver glo sticks, and yet in spite of this, they're still not able to get Padme through fucking childbirth. Even with fucking robots. That's not even the fucking half of it.

Fuck your stupid lightie-sticks, Star Wars. Give me the holodeck and some free time any day. Not to mention the replicator. ALL THE FUCKING CHOCOLATE YOU COULD EVER WANT!

Also, I'd probably dick around with both Data and Spock. Tell me you're not curious how Vulcan sex works. I'd bet you couldn't wrap your mind-meld around that one.

With the exception of Spock, there is no character development whatsoever in Star Trek. Essentially, all the characters are all one note and experience no growth whatsoever--Picard in the first episode of season 1 of Next Gen is the saaaame Picard of the final season of Next Gen. He doesn't really change at all. Same thing with Kirk, Janeway, etc. Especially Kirk--movie 2, his best friend in the whole world dies and he's kinda just like, "Well, that kinda sucks", and goes back to being his snarky, confident, captiany self. The =only= character who changes is Spock--he goes from being humorless and totally logical to developing a relationship with Kirk and learning emotions may not be so bad and all. And personally, I feel that the ONLY reason this point is conveyed at all is because Nimoy is so damn awesome. If Spock was taken outta Trek, it'd be super boring ( ... )

Finally, if you wanna see a show that did space adventuring right, you should really watch the new Battlestar Gallactica, as they address all the problems that pissed me off about Trek--like what happens when the people who work the same jobs for 3 years wanna get promoted, or even change jobs. Or what happens when you start running out of food/fuel. Or what happens when your engineers wanna have a union. Its awesome. It kinda had a retarded ending, but everything up until the last 45 minutes of the show was epically amazing, and loaaads better than the boring, episodic, monster-of-the-week nature of the Trek shows, which I put just barely above the crappiness that is Stargate ( ... )

How does Leia change in the series? The only difference between the Leia beginning to end is her love for Han, which is not exceptional ( ... )

But the how and why of Luke going about changing is incredibly cheap. After his foster parents are massacred and his home destroyed, do you really think he has anything left in order for him to either rebuild on the same planet or create a new path for himself at all? His only choice, as dictated by fate (and also a little matter called survival) is to go with the Jedi. From there, it's only a snow-ball effect of things happening to him. How much character development can there be when there are few opportunities to make choices regarding your environment. He changes because it's either that or die. Not because there is anything inherently honorable, developing, or challenging in the process ( ... )
