Well, I now have my Linux system the way I like it. By the way, Chris... is you really hate Explorer for XP, try EF Commander. It's kinda like the old Norton version, complete with side by side file management in the same window.

Hey hope you are doing okay. And I"m not going to defend that I enjoy the SUV because I enjoy it.

Good luck with your cousin. And I should be in town next weekend with your gift if you are interested.

You really didn't have to get me a gift, especially early. But if you'd like to get together, just let me know when you're in town. I'll try to call or IM you tonight.

Except that now it's called Fire Fox, and although it works as a file browser, its main intent is a web browser. EF is a dedicated File Manager. There's an even better version for Linux, although I'm using Konqueror and it meets my needs reasonably well.

I may give it a try. I checked out the website. The many stacked toolbars looked intimidating... But that can probably be altered.

I really don't like Konqueror as either a web-browser or a file-manager... Some people really love it though. I personally feel like file and web browsers should be separate things. I prefer two column browsers because they make it really easy to copy files from one directory to another, and can be a lot faster than drag and drop.

I do really like:
Krusader
Which is a cool commander style file manager for KDE which also looks very pretty.

Konqueror can be as many-columned as you want, with any format (list, icon, detailed list, etc). You can alter the toolbars in EF.

I need to check out Krusader... it looks interesting.

It's true that Konqueror is really customizable. Most people that advocate Konqueror point this out. To me Konqueror's default appearence is horribly cluttered though. Krusader has the advantage of mimicking not just the appearance the commander style browsers but almost all of the keybindings and functions are the same as well. Krusader, MC and XNC have many keyboard shortcuts and such in common and I can comfortably switch between them. Plus Krusader is a lot faster on my machine. Konqueror is a good browser and has a ton of features, I just find it to be too much for me.

I think file and web browser preference is a form of personal expression ;)

Have you looked at the new Enlightenment file-browser? From the screenshots It looks very "Macish" to me but I haven't tried downloading it since the next version of E is still unstable...

You should make a poll on your journal and determine what everyone's favorite file browser is and what everyone's favorite web browser is. It would be interesting to see for some reason.

I should. I can't do an "official" LJ poll due to my lack of paid membership, but it's a good topic for discussion.

I have Mandrake up and running, but I apprently didn't install Enlightenment, so that's on the list of things to do. Now that I have KDE looking un-ugly (aka Macish) I might stick with it for a bit, but I'll check out the E file-browser.
