i know where you're coming from re: knocked up. i enjoyed it enough (i also saw it for free which makes me happier about any movie) but i also don't understand the raving about it.
It's by Judd Apatow, who's regularly gotten good reviews since "Freaks and Geeks", as well as some of the stuff before that. Basically, he's a darling of the critics. I haven't seen the movie, so I can't speak to it, but I've generally enjoyed other work of his that I've seen (F&G, Talladaga Nights, 40yo Virgin).
Yeah, I'm aware of the Judd Apatow collection. All my friends are big fans. I just don't get it. I didn't like 40 YOV, but I thought it was because I don't like Steve Carrell. Just not my kind of humor I suppose.
"Knocked Up" was brilliant because amongst the distracting, chaotic, puerile humor was brutally honest criticism about relationships and the choices we each make.
well, think about it, movies are a business, their ultimate goal is to make money, even if the writers' ultimate goals are to say something. that's what makes this even more brilliant, he got away with saying the things we all think but don't ever say - sobering things about very difficult decisions - and still made bank bec of the weed and dick jokes.
