What exactly IS a legitimate instrument? Does voice count as an "instrument"? Are they a disgruntled banjo enthusiast? Or are they referring to the fact that the sax is the bastard offspring of the clarinet and the trombone?
McKinney was "brutal at times"? Funny...I didn't notice that at all.
Secondly, I've played with some fo those first years in Wind Ensemble, and they sure sound like they earned their spot to me.
Thirdly, although the sax doesn't top my list of favourite instruments (sorry, Andy), I still think it's a legitimate instrument. I will even grudgingly admit that no jazz instrument can tear up those runs like the sax can. and while classical sax isn't as popular, who cares? I've played low brass my entire band career, I'm used to playing relatively easy lines with an unpopular instrument.
and finally...don't be a coward. sign your name next time.
wow...someone needs to remember who they're talking about...call me crazy, but mckinney was not doctorate...he left to do his masters so it's kinda hard to call him dr when he ain't even a masters student. that's just me though, even if i played in both wind ensemble and symphonic in first year (crazy anon person)
When Professor McKinney was at UWO, he didn't have his PhD, so you are correct in pointing out his "lack of doctorate". He did, however, have an undergraduate and masters desgree as well as a specialist diploma (in conducting, or wind conducting I believe).
well...i know he wasn't a doctor...granted i was a first year when he left thus left outta the loop on a number of things, but i still think the point is there (yay for confirmation!)

Gotta love the push for "constructive criticism" coupled with the anti-saxophone references. I love it when people contradict themselves ^_^
