I usually don't mind Autorun for CD/DVD, but this time my external hard drive requires 2 USB connections and I need to connect the USB connectors simultaneously to avoid the "Port power surge exceeded" message from popping up. More often than not, I get that warning message and I couldn't properly eject the hard drive afterward because some silly XP data write protection. I figured after a while that disabling the autorun for that drive could prevent this situation.
This method only applicable if you fixed the USB drive to a specific drive letter. There used to be a method to fully block all USB device autorun with just one click and I've used it before I re-image my hard disk. I can't remember how to do it anymore now >_
