I've heard of those techniques being used before. I like the idea.
Generally, our meetings aren't pointless. It just seems the level of detail is what will change. If the meeting has gone on long enough, people ignore the little details that really aren't important and they don't bring them up. If the meeting looks like it will end early, then people decide to throw out just one more little thing.
Maybe it's just my definition of necessity that we're going beyond.
