I understand the pattern, but not the cause

Today a man asked me if I was Amish. And he explained that he could hear my accent.

A drunk guy recently asked Amitai if he was Amish because he was named "Ami." Apparently, not the first time that has happened.

I get both of these a lot. Usually not together. The first time I noticed the Amish was 2003, in Germany. But by Americans. Many immigrant men (whom I met because they were driving me somewhere in a taxi) have commented that I have an accent, usually a British accent.

The most recent guy was native-born and said both Amish and accent (did not specify what), which is new but continues the pattern.
