Sadie had to have a toe removed because of a mast cell tumor (front left paw), and she walked just fine on one less toe. Sending vibes and hugs to everyone, human and canine.
I am assuming that is Sadie in the picture. She is very pretty. I am not too worried about the toe. Lucy has already lost the nail on that toe from a previous accident. It is her back left paw, the outside toe. I am sure she will get along fine with one less toe and the vet assures me that toe amputations are fairly routine.
Yeah, she was fine, too - after she healed, you could barely even tell it was missing unless you looked. I have to admit that carrying a 70 lb. wriggling dog up to a 2nd floor apartment for a week after her surgery was Not Much Fun. ;-)
(yes, that's her - she was a real sweetie, and I miss her terribly to this day; its been 11 years (this month) since she died)
I can imagine carrying 70 lb. Sadie was not easy. My kids don't weigh that much yet but it's getting harder for me to carry them. Carrying Lucy (16 lbs.) is fine because she likes to be carried. Our other Jack Russell, Brandy, (13 lbs.) is a wiggler. She will let one of our neighbor's sons hold her like a baby though (tummy-up) so maybe she has a special place in her heart for him.
Sadie was a beauty. I was sitting her trying to write my next sentence and I almost wrote, "Dogs are such special people." Ours are truly like our daughters and I am sure you felt the same about Sadie.
I'm sorry. Hopefully she can get to surgery quickly and get them taken care of. Note that generally these are considered individual new tumors, and not metastases, so at least it isn't an indicator of systemic involvement.
Thanks Hillary. Yes, the pathologist and the vet said the tumors are not systemic so we are hopeful that Lucy will be OK. I don't know how fast the chemo/prednisone is supposed to work but the tumors don't seem to be shrinking after 3 weeks of treatment. The pathologist told the vet he should abort the chemo after 4 weeks if it didn't appear to be working and just do the surgeries.
Thanks. She is doing wonderfully right now. No tummy upset or hair loss from the chemo. The huge Frankenstein scar on her neck looks great since the sutures came out and she is acting like nothing even happened in regards to the surgery. She is 9 years old and still is out every day chasing the squirrels and acting like a puppy.
*hugs* and vibes, it's so so hard when our special furry friends are dealing with this sort of thing, isn't it? I'll be sending her some good strong FIGHT THE TUMORS energy!
