Flat is going ok, but slowly. I put aside a week to redocorate the entire flat, but I'll only have 1 room done in that time. It looks bloody fantastic though ( Read more... )

Seems wrong to use you as a guineapig (sp?) but I've not known anyone to get a Be line yet. Please keep up informed as to progress. I'm loosing faith in Zen as they are clearly doing packet shaping with a chainsaw atm.

re zen: oh why? what are you seeing? according to zen people on adslguide forums they have no traffic shaping in place of any kind.

That was also one of the reasons I decided to switch providers - That and their withdrawal of unmetered products.

I was seeing definate traffic shaping. Low QOS on various ports. I switched inbound torrents to nonstandard ports and my throughput increased massively.

It's a real shame. I was a huge proponent of Zen for many years, probably put about 20-30 customers their way, professionally and personally, by personal recommendation, but I stopped recommending them about 9 months ago.

Yaaar!
The "luck of Steve" holds out against all adversity.
Good to hear that flat going well.
When do you invite everyone round to break...er..."see" it?

soon, soon. Not as quickly as I hoped, by the time I go back to work I'll only have 2 rooms done, and it'll take me a while to finish the others, only doing stuff in the evenings and weekends, but hopefully about 6 weeks or so?

cool.
Glad it's working out well.
You not gonna try and press-gang friends into helping with the promise of beer and food?
Most people I know use that tactic when decorating/moving ;-)

I already used that tactic with a cry for help (in return for beer and pizza) on the mailing list me and most of my friends use. I've got Pilot_Moondog coming round tomorrow, the only person to take me up on the offer. Roger is helping me move my stuff from Andy's to my new place on Sunday. Any more offers of assistance will be gratefully accepted!

Likewise v interested in how you find Be.

My reading of comments/feedback about them is that:

1. Customer service sucks.
2. Referrals scheme was a scheme not an offer, and they pissed off a lot of people with their (re-)interpretation of terms.
3. Be tech people *are* tech people not script monkeys, but like most tech people get grumpy and can be slow to reply.
4. They do offer really fast speeds if a line is good quality.

1. Customer service used to be based in India and sucked. It's now running out of Bulgaria and is a huge order of magnitude better. My dealings with them so far have been very good indeed! I'm impressed.

2. Don't know what you are referring (sic) to.

3. Definately get the impression I'm speaking to at least base-trained techs rather than script monkeys. I suspect there is a deeper level of techs I havn't had to deal with yet. Of the 5 calls I've made, onle once was the rep a bit grumpy, others were friendly.

4. I'm only getting 13Mb down (and the full 1.3 up). I'm a bit disappointed, but I've discovered the BT wiring in this flat is in a shocking state. I opened the master socked and it disintegrated into pieces. Inside was no proper socket, but a basic termination block with shitty looking wiring. I've got BT coming out to me on Wednesday to replace the master socket with a new one, and I'll replace the rest of the wiring myself. Hopefully that should improve matters.

#2 they had a refer someone scheme, then backtracked when people starting posting on forums, and getting really large numbers of people signed up.

Read adslguide forum on Be - I'm really surprised you didn't before signing up!

re #4, check that chart. That looks about right to me. What's your downstream attenuation?
