Wind (prevailing direction) makes for anoticeable difference, at least if it's moderately strong.
Slant of ground makes a difference (and not much is needed).
Psychological effect (it's always easier going from work than to work).
Even if "slant of ground" is the major contributing factor, bear in mind that the Thames has fairly high banks and isn't, spot-on, at "sea-level" except down at Southend.
Wind - I don't think so. Cycling up a hill is different to cycling into a headwind, it feels different, no noticable wind effect.
Slant of ground... well, it's the same roads there as back, so if I was having to put extra effort in because of that, then it'd be the same the other way.
As to the psychological effect, I'm one of those wierdos who enjoys work :) I don't particularly like travelling, but I'm fairly eager to get into the office of a morning. It's possible though... although I look forward to work, I probably look forward to going home more (I just generally look forward to most things, really)
The height of the banks might be it, but at Vauxhall it's not particularly high... going across the bridge, the water seems a lot closer than it does on other bridges.
You could be below sea level, some places are. Bear in mind that the Thames has huge flood defences - it isnt beyond the realms of possibility. The way to check would be to look on an OS map. Em
