Ugh. My mom's dad broke his hip, around '94 IIRC, and that was traumatic in terms of mobility and so on, as well... There's never any really good way to respond to this sort of thing, but you have my sympathy and good wishes.
I'm hesitant to say this...but...I'll go for it anyway. Doctors have, in the past, not given as much pain medication as they should.
For example, my grandmother was at one point in bad enough (chronic) pain that she said things like "I know why people kill themselves because of pain." My mother started looking up information on the net about medication for her particular condition, and found some. My grandmother brought printouts to her doctor, and got some new prescriptions, which made her if not pain-free, herself again.
I agree. My grandfather's SICU nurse and anesthesiologist both seemed very willing to give him as much medicine as necessary, saying they didn't believe in pain. The problem, I think, was my grandfather: they gave him one of those self-controlled things of morphine, and he simply didn't press the button enough.
He always seems pretty modern/ progressive to me, but maybe he still has a little more old-school Italian man/ WWII vet machismo than is ideal.... Or maybe he was losing track of time, as I did when they put me on morphine, and constantly felt he'd only just pushed the d%#& button.
Anyway, he's seemed better since they switched him to percoset and just guessed up for the dose.
That's so terrible. I hope he has found some pain medication that works for him. Did his arm return to normal? Did the doctors have any idea why the circulation in the leg failed? The whole thing sounds so scary - I wish your family the best of luck in dealing with this.
I'm sorry you're all going through this, my dear. *hugs* I'm also sorry I'm not there to dispense "Krys-hugs" in person. my best wishes to your grandfather for his recovery, therapy and pain management. *hugs*
