but in places some of the violence is was just a bit over the top to step me out of the narrative (like the scene with the cats, for those of you who have seen it)
The cats played as a moment of weird black comedy for me, which I suppose still might have been a jar in tone; it was less violent than violently WTF?
Yeah, the other big bit of violence in the movie also came off the same way.
If you mean the scene at the pool, that one works for me: it's shot so smoothly, with a kind of dreamlike deliberation-and strikingly beautiful color-the viewer might almost forget to be horrified.
There are definitely scenes in LTROI that I felt were out of place. The whole subplot with the woman wasn't totally necessary. The plot with the "girl's" Renfield would have been enough to get the dogs on their heels, if that was the purpose. As I think I mentioned, she's not really a girl but a eunuch -- at least, that's what I'm told was in the book this was based on. That flash scene to her genitals is supposed to show that they're mutilated, but it didn't really work. She does say that she's "not a girl," which is puzzling but makes sense with the other information.
That last scene in the pool was hilarious and wonderful. Very memorable.

Mostly *from* the cats. The violence in response is of the 'get them off me' kind.

I'm a major cat lover and I was totally cool with the cat scene. It was just a bit of stupid in an otherwise very cool movie.
