this photo shows where my head's at these days, I think. Plus I think it's pretty. A lot of research, though I've taken a break to finish off Joe Abercrombie's second novel in his fantasy trilogy (Before They Are Hanged, I think it is called - fun, but jesus, can you make any more unlikable characters? Weird how many people I find interesting and cool are originally West Virginia refugees (like myself).

:)

Where in West Virginia are you from?

Apropos of nothing, I just found out one of my favorite bands - Swans - is 'reformed' and is touring again, but the furthest West they'll be playing is Chicago. Might have to visit your neck of the woods come October!

The Beckley/Peterstown area. Red Sulphur Springs. :p

Burqa refers to a full body covering, though it can also mean this plus the elongated headscarf and the face netting/veil. Chador is a sort of cloak that wraps around the head, with the face exposed. Apparently, the black versions we now associate with these garments are apparently a modern trend, as they used to be in lighter colours: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chador

In Southeast Asia, where I come from, head coverings are still usually in non-black colours, or printed with patterns. Plain single-coloured versions (not necessarily dark colours either), particularly the very long, half-body length headscarves (with possibly a veil), are associated with the very conservative set. The use of fancy colours and patterns today seems to be at least partly related to reclaiming veils and headscarves as personalised expressions of faith for fashionable muslimah.
