It's official...

Yesterday I finally got notice of my bankruptcy discharge in the mail. I hope this means I'll be able to start building up some credit again. Wonder if I should try for a debit card first, or go for a credit card? Either way, I'd better resolve to pay it off every month, or I'll be right back in trouble.

blimey - how long does bankruptcy last in the US? It took me three years here ...

I started the filing process back in June, so it took about four months start-to-finish to file, have the hearing, and receive the discharge. (I wanted to get it done before the rules changed, which they do this month.)

But the fact that I've declared bankruptcy will stay on my record for a certain number of years (seven, maybe?), so any potential creditors can see it and act accordingly.

Thank you! I think I'll just have to request a card from lots of places and see who's willing to give me one. :)

At least over here, lots of applications in a short space of time tend to make your credit record worse -- failed applications give you an even worse score...

That's true here, too, but I need to get some kind of card soon! It's amazing how many businesses require a credit or debit card number.

I'd try for just one debit card initially. (one at a time so as not to hit your credit score if you get turned down) and debit rather than credit as I suspect it would be much easier to get.

That sounds like a good plan.
