de.li.cious

One of the things I realized after the "If You Build It, They Will Come" panel at Writercon* is that I've not been making the best use of available "community" resources. Case in point, de.li.cious. When I first signed up I bookmarked tons of things and ended up with a disjointed wodge of data that seemed impenetrable. So I walked away. Clearly ( Read more... )

Um... I'm not an expert at all, but I try to a) find a simple but effective summary, and b) use both all-encapsulating tags (like 'torchwood' for anything related to the show) and more specific ones (such as names of characters or pairings). copperbadge has a great account with only TW fic recs that works very well indeed.

Also, I just went back and had a look at this post of yours, since it is now 1 1/2 years later and I just finished my Jack-is-The-Immortal fic, which ended up being 83,000 words long. I'm not sure whether to blame you or thank you! ;)

ETA: OH! Re. delicious - I added the buttons to my toolbar, and that is just *fantastic*. I can click on a button and just *save* stuff (whatever you highlight goes in the 'comment box', you don't even have to copy & paste), and there's no clicking away from the page you're on. I think that's what I like the most, and why I use it so much - it's just incredibly simple and straightforward.

You're finished the Immortal fic? I am *so* loading that on my eReader! And, umm...sorry? Heh.

Thanks for the input. I did load the Firefox extension which should make things easier in the future. I just really need to go in and clean up the mess I've already made.

That sounds like a nifty thing to have! (The story is on my LJ, on the Teaspoon and on Twisting the Hellmouth - don't know which is easiest for you to use?) ETA: Don't be sorry. Buffy/Jack is the best ship EVER. You'll see what I mean! :)

Thanks for the input.
Looking at the other replies I just sort of waived my arms and went 'Shiny!' *g* And good luck - I really ought to organise some of *my* stuff better.

I'm also curious about using de.whatever. I just haven't been able to make it a useful part of my life. So either I'm doing it wrong, or I don't need it.

So many people swear by it that I think I must be doing it wrong. But we'll see. I often find what is "logical" to other people is too labor intensive for me. But I'm willing to give it a second chance.

I rarely use my own delicious but I'll admit that sometimes I've looked up the link to a story I liked in delicious to see if anyone's saved it and if so, clicked on that person to see what else they've saved ( ... )

I think the overuse of tags is one area that drags the process down for me.

I never knew of the Read It Later extension. That is brilliant! Sometimes the weight of open tabs makes my laptop barely portable. ;) I'm talking open for days.

Thanks for the tip!

read it later is also WONDERFUL for WIPs, mark the main page and check it occassionally and see if new chapters have been put up.

Great tips, thank you! I like the idea of "do not share" until it's ready for prime time and tag prefixes. I think, as I said above, that an overabundance of tabs bogs things down for me so it really is finding a workable system for me. But seeing how other people navigate is really, really helpful. Like you said, there's no "key" but lots of possibilities.

SVilleficrecs talk about how to be useful to others. Herre's how to use other good recs: I use it as a combined rec list via subscriptions and bundling ( ... )

Aldo, there are great Firefox extension tools which make memorying quite easy. I'm gonna look for the instructions Lim wrote up for metafandom a couple of years ago but they're still mostly valid, I think...

Thank you! There is a lot of really great stuff here. I think part of the issue is determining what I want my delicious account to *be*. Once I get that clear I can determine the best format to accomplish that goal.

Oh, and a final one for newsletters (yes, dead horse and all ;)

*g*

I am not totally inflexible. Just because something doesn't work for us now doesn't mean that it won't in the future. Are there any tutorials or instructions? It's been ages since I've looked into the delicious script (a hard drive ago *weeps*) and I no longer have any bookmarks. Since we are a very democratic model and personnel shift all the time, it's a concept that might be received differently now than when first proposed.

Thanks again for all of your tips. Your enthusiasm about the use of delicious was one of the things that prompted me to take a closer look at my v.v. neglected account.
