I don't think our basic health coverage covers injuries to/from work either. Here, your car insurance increases if your vehicle is a commuter vehicle compared to a leisure vehicle

People have a lot more power to bargain when part of a Union. If you are not part of a Union (in Australia and the UK at least) you are pretty much powerless if you have an issue with your boss. You say 'just leave' if you don't like where you are working, but what about people for whom that job is vital and they would have a great deal of difficulty finding another job, particularly people such as single parents or the disabled? Unions here protect people from unfair employers who might, say, want to give a job to a friend so they fire someone to create a vacancy. Unions give legal and financial backing to people who've been sexually abused at work, or unfairly passed over for promotion
