I completely conquer with the whole sacrificing the data plan thing. When I had to sacrifice mine when I went on med leave, I cried. I literally cried because I couldn't access the internet whenever I wanted. So I completely feel your pain.

Patrick and I did the same thing when I got my promotion, we stopped tracking every little item, and now we're perplexed as to how we made all of our payments when he was working part time as a Tour Guide and I had just started at the brewery.

You truly get complacent in a certain standard of living and it hurts when all that is disrupted.

As for the virus thing. That just isn't right. I am wondering how she is a Senior Scientist in your lab though. You can get promotions while working as a Grad Student?

I'm definite that something good is going to come out of all of your hard work. It may not show itself in the next year, but it will happen eventually.

She is a senior scientist since she already has her PhD. But instead of running her own lab, she works under my boss. So she can do research without having to thump around for grants like my boss. So in terms of age and degree, she really is senior to me. She is a very nice person. I don't know if she realizes what has just happened though. And at this point in the game, it is useless to rock the boat and tell her what happened. It doesn't further my research and all it does is harbor ill will towards me. This is my example of "picking my battles" I guess.

And yeah, hopefully, since I am working my butt off, I'll be done in a year!

That makes sense. Still lazy on her part, but my question is answered.

If you want to do anything in academia, you kind have to do grants or you don't get paid and/or you don't get the equipment you need.

I'm very much a pick my battles kind of person myself, so I can understand why you didn't bring it up to her. I would totally do the same thing so it doesn't make her dislike me and make for an awkward working environment.

But, yes, you'll be done in one year. You have that eye on the prize, so I know you can do it!

You are so good to save for Kenzie. If there is one thing I wish my parents had done, it is save for education. It's created a really sore spot with my sibs that they help me (very little, in the grand scheme of things) and were not able to help them.

I'm glad you're making responsible choices, and sorry lab is sucky. Med school sucks, too, and eats your life and replaces it with one full of cynicism and hazing. We have to turn to each other, the other girls barely getting by, for support and love. I intend to be around for you much more than I have been for the past four months. Love you, Jo.
