To Move Up or Not...

What a whirl wind June was!  The first week of July was crazy too!  I was doing some tractor work and had been invited to work sheep at two different places.  Add in there a trip to La Grande with the Reynold's clan to pick up a new to them SUV things were busy.

Since I have not seen Rooster work in person, I can't give you any advice on whether he is ready to handle Open or not. My opinion is if you think he can handle the distances in Open, then give it a try. It is a big jump between ProNov and Open. Having his Open debut on a field he has been on before would be helpful. True range sheep are very different to work but since Rooster doesn't have all that much eye, the range sheep might like him. That is great that you have been able to get him out to different places on different sheep. Originally I was planning on going to Sonia's trial in October but then she changed the dates and I don't feel like switching my vacation time around so I am going to go to Dave Imas' trial instead, plus take a lesson with Lyle Lad with Chip. I need to start getting Chip out to work at different places.

Ah! I'm bummed you're not coming to Sonia's! If I did move him to Open it would be at Sonia's, which would be his third trial there and she had a practice day last winter. He likes and does well on her sheep. His first time there she used her spring lambs in the fall and purposely didn't work them so they'd be fresh for the trial and he had no problem with them. As far as the distances go, we've been working in big fields(120+ acres), flat to rolling hills for terrain. I've used Poppet to set them out so Rooster had to find them, which he hasn't had a problem with. I've set them to where he could see them from the "post", but would have to run blind for a while either through a draw or around a little hill to get to the sheep. I've set it up so he has to run across a little pasture, go through a gate and make a hard right, run down pasture and pick them up. My best guess for yardage would be the biggest outruns have been 400 yards. When ever I have a big field available, I try and get some big outruns in. Same with driving ( ... )
