Even though I have it as an e-ARC it's on my order list for the local sf/f-bookstore. To be mine as soon as it lands. I read a couple of chapters but I want to hold it while I read and, with great reluctance, I put it down and wait for my paper book.
"...and the vaults of the heavens will re-order themselves in an instant (from a mortal perspective) as a character crosses a border." This sounds so cool. Your description of the skies alone makes me want to buy this book. I've seen a few blogs mention the book, but none of them said anything about the setting.
"What's your favorite Elizabeth Bear novel?" was going to be my reddit question, but then I moved and lost my reddit password and didn't feel like getting another account.
So I guess I'll ask it here, where she's even more likely to see the answer.
I was prepared to be skeptical because of your relationship with her and because I'm an asshole, but your explanations of her world and the rules and some inspirations has me ready to read it now.
I'll wait to see what else you write about it this week because I like to make people sweat (I'm an asshole, remember...). ;)
