Unwanted advise. Buy an external harddrive, buy two. Put all your important files in each. Put the harddrive somewhere safe in your house. Then put the other in your girlfriends house. If you are forced to wipe your harddrive, then your files are safe.

I always used to consider myself a computer badass (with no basis for this idea whatsoever). Okay, I'd tell myself, I'm not really a programmer and I don't know how to do a lot of techy stuff and I sometimes need to call my engineer brother for advice, but I did my due diligence and read up on computers and felt very strongly that I should always get a Windows machine simply because computers are supposed to be things you can open up and dust out, and where you should be able to add more memory or change your graphics cards or whatever YOURSELF and not go to some so-called genius to do it for you. Only Windows machines let you do that, so I felt honor-bound to always get one ( ... )
