On that note, I think you'd really enjoy Diablo 3 as well, and am sincerely hoping that they'll patch in some kind of single-player option for all the people who haven't got reliable connections or react violently at anything that's DRM-like. (My experience is that it hasn't failed for me since I installed it, and I've put in a lot of hours at all different times of day, if that helps at all.)
I can't speak for the rest of the bastardry that much of the rest of the industry has gotten into lately, but Diablo 3's persistent connection is really, well... coincidentally DRM. It's really more an anti-hacking, anti-cheating, Auction House security measure. The fact that is requires a persistent connection is really the only thing it has in common with other DRM techniques, and it's really not the primary goal of the thing.
But all that being said: yeah, it's easier to find a more entertaining book if what entertains you is story. Which for you, I suspect, that is the case. ^_^
