Plagiarism

Can someone really not know that directly quoting from an internet source is still plagiarism?

I'd write more, but I am truly so emotionally exhausted over this issue that I can't form clear thoughts around it anymore.

yes BUT, kids in public high school might be reprimanded, fail the assignment, and then be forgiven for not knowing, because high school is the time when you should be learning about citing. ("oh yeah I wasn't paying attention when Mrs. C told us about that part")
If you make it to college YOU SHOULD KNOW. Not to mention most departments have books specifically on this topic.
At least try and cite, even if you cite badly if you are going to directly quote something you did not write.

AND....The Prof and I handed out an information sheet defining plagiarism. We then told the students that we were the last two people they should try this with. We both take plagiarism very seriously.

Well, considering that by definition everything on the Internet is free, that would mean that any source used on the Internet would be free as well and thus not require a citation. Right? :-P

the internet, by definition, is common knowledge. And you don't cite things that are commonly known, right?

Man, I should find an internet site about my dissertation topic that is about 250 pages worth of information and pass it off as my own....oh wait....the whole reason we caught this student is that internet scholarship is pretty crappy. Either way, you don't get to quote verbatim from any source even if it is common knowledge.
