Long time no update

Well, I think I got my wish. Work is anything but boring right now. I think I am adjusting to my new role as Director of IT pretty well and am trying to be a better boss by applying some of the things I learned when told I was "not a good boss" a couple of years ago. Mostly it has to do with my introverted nature. I'm naturally the kind of boss ( Read more... )

For you I think we could arrange something on VERY favorable terms. . .

I wanted to say something about "paying out the ass" but I was chastised recently for being too vulgar all the time : /

My team lead does a walk-around every morning when she gets in just to say hi and see how things are going & how everyone is doing. I think that works well, it's a chance to just say, "hey" or let her know of something we should discuss later...

Tried that?

I've been trying something akin to that.Makin sure I wander around once a day and just check in with people. Trying to make more ocntact in person rather than the phone or e-mail.

One thing you can do, is let your meetings with your peeps run over. If you can ask how they are, what they are doing and get to know them as peeps. This should give you some conversation starters.

Been working on that too. I have a weekly meeting with the whole staff (there are only 12 of us) where I usually try to answer questions and let them know what is going on, but keep the mood light and "playful" if that makes any sense.

Well, you know me some, too being a bit introverted as well. While I only managed up to 5 people at a time with our Web Systems group, it could still be a challenge ( ... )

INdividual meetings are a good idea. I might try that although with 12 people, maybe I could rotate them and do everyone once a month.

That's a LOT of people to track. So, yeah, you're going to have to compromise there.

the tricky thing about being a director or a supervisor or any of that is getting people to respect you AND want to work for you at the same time. some bosses toe the line by trying to be everyone's friend and it comes back and bites them in the ass. some manage to get the authoritative thing across and also alienate all the people around them.

sounds like you're getting a good feel for it. hope things are still as productive for you a week later :)

Thanks. I struggle with the respect vs like equation. I have no problem with people respecting me, but I struggle to get them to like me if that makes any sense. Most of it I think is related to the fact that I am pretty introverted and not very "touchy feely" unless I know you well. I am working on getting to know my employees better without being too "fake friendly"
