More suckage. For those that din't know, I recently went in for special finanaceing on, what I had come to think was a pretty damn sensible car. A 2002 Boneville SSei, with more buttons and flashing lights and gadgets than a good portion of the Nasco household. Possibly the closet. Well, I got my hopes up, and as such, they got dashed. They want ( Read more... )

Don't EVER negotiate for a car in terms of the monthly payment. That's where they get you. ALWAYS start from the total cost. As soon as you give them a target monthly payment they know they have you.

Tell them you'll get financed through your own bank and that they need to give you a total figure so you can arrange the loan. They HATE that. They hate that because they can't screw you out of a few thou extra by setting up a less-than-optimal deal with thier perferred lender who gives them a kickback.

Both times I've been involved in buying a car I've done it that way, and both times the finance guy has gotten pouty and childish at me. They REALLY want to scrape some interest money out of you, and will pull anything they can to get you to agree to a longer (and in the end more expensive) loan. Low monthly payment my ass.

Your bank will not pull this crap. Talk to them ahead of time, let them know what price range you are anticipating, and you can get pre-approved for it. Then when you go to the dealers' they can't talk you past that, which they will ALSO hate.

Thats good advice; thats actually the way I wanted to do things, and kind of did that with my first car, yea. Never thought about them getting kickbacks though. The only flaw with this is.. what bank? and my credit suuuccckkks. See, having a repo REALLY limits your options and kinna puts you at the mercy of the bank and the dealership. I've been good the past 2 or 3 years and have incurred no new debt, although no new credit either. I owe Bank of America money; which is probably part of the problem. Not alot, but We've been getting paid better and I hope to remedy this situation soon.

Humm. Well, I have a Grand Am now, and it gets 30mpg and was 10K. problem is, it's now got 120K miles on it. We also have different views; I really want a bit of power.. okay a LOT of power. I've tried three times and they always say the same thing on 15K-18K dollar cars, 'well, if we had 2K down' SOOO, I think I'm going to save my money and tax return for a couple of months, and damnit, I'm getting another Firebird. Might as well be happy. Sure they are a bit high on the maintainence end, and get more like 22 mpg, (hwy) but if it's my choice, I can't bitch. :p

I know you have a thing about used cars, but my mom has had minimal repairs on her $5000 Eclipse, and it's been running smoothly for four years. For the chronically underemployed, it's nice to have a payment schedule that *ends*...
