As for the codec, that's the easy part. Your video card comes with a DVD playback suite. You just have to install all of the ATI programs, and one of those is the DVD playback codecs.
The problem with that is, you have to uninstall the nifty drivers you were using. *shrugs* Maybe you can install the suite and codecs by themselves?
Also...hmm, that's funky about not wanting to read DVD's. I have -no- clue about why that would be happening. Maybe a defective drive?

I'd get it replaced quick if it's not working well. That's a plus of buying local, you can make them exchange it.

It still won't play DVDs.. it reads them okay, just no play. Thats probably not a drive problem, though. So, yay! I din't want to replace it, as those things were going like hotcakes at Frys, (they are probably out of stock) which is why I got it.. 89 with a 30 rebate.. so, yea, sony's newest Dual Layer burner for 50 bucks and change. I nabbed one and before I could decide the whole stack was GONE. It was like feeding time! anyway.. :p
