I just finished the first book.  I liked the storyline that Rowling is presenting...but the actual caliber of the writing isn't something I am all that impressed with (although I've been told it improves as the series progresses).  Specifically, I was a bit let down by the climax when Harry has been captured and Quirrell is volunteering his entire

I don't remember if she gives a lot more insight on the centaur's beliefs, but they have some really great parts in the series.

If I remember correctly, the beginning of the second book isn't so great, especially writing-wise. I think the first three are all pretty juvenile that way, especially the "now here's what you missed" summary.

The sacrifice of the unicorn really struck me, and it's my clearest memory of the first book.
