"Anything good in life is either illegal, immoral, or fattening". (Someone-or-other Pardo)

It always seems to be a trade-off between sugars and fats. :( If it's nice to eat, it's probably going to have lots of one or the other. Interestingly, there was an article in the most recent New Scientist proposing that we do have taste-buds for fats, and I seem to recall another one in an older issue about how fats bind to opiate receptors in the brain as well, leading to speculation that addiction could actually possible.

Not that that knowledge really is really useful to you, or me, or anyone else at this stage, but I thought it was worth noting. :)

The thing is, I don't have a problem with either sugar or fat (although it is possible to have flavour without them - look at ginger!). What really irritates me is the way they're promoted as being good for you, when in the quantities they subtly advocate, they're really not. It has a big impact on people's ability to judge good food from less good, and discourages moderation.

It also makes me very irritable, but that's not so hard to do :)
