Of monkey and snakes.

In some parts of sub-urban Indonesia, it is common to find monkeys living in the villages and with that come the inherent knowledge of eating them. Known to have medicinal values, most people who eat monkey meat (toes, meat and organs) usually suffer from severe asthma and for impotency. Monkeys are mostly sought after by these people for these ( Read more... )

Blood and insides...no, but for the meat, I should have no problems swallowing it down. I would think snakes are a common commodity in the region, and I slaughtered and ate frogs before, which isn't any less gross than snakes I guess. And I wouldn't be surprised if it really does taste like chicken. But monkeys... if I didn't have to see the whole thing... maybe. They look too much like some of us, really. No brains though, that's for sure. I think it's just sick to eat their brains, worse still, those who do it while the monkey is still alive. I would think that is cruel whatever culture those people who do it are from, but that is just me. I'd just throw them into the zoos where they can waste their lives doing tricks.

I won't comment on the Monkey brain since I assume from the lack of photos and further information that it's not really the main topic of this post.

Snake blood and raw "insides" I won't even contemplate eating. It actually makes me kinda queasy to think about it. I liken it to eating Oysters, which I can't stomach eating more than 2 or 3 at most (freshness might be an issue but I'm digressing).

Snake meat on the other hand, properly cooked and scales removed, is very very nice. It doesn't taste like chicken (seriously, why does everything taste like chicken?) and has a very smooth texture. Snake meat is pretty good in herbal soups and I imagine that like any other meat, it would taste good with proper preparation. Each type of meat (chicken, pork, beef) has certain ingredients that would bring out the best features in each of them and I imagine that snakes are no exception.

Furthermore, I think I would have eaten the "insides" if they weren't raw, if only to try them out.

I've personally tried the snake meat while i was on a holiday in ho chi minh city earlier this year. it was a good experience.. although to me, having it as a "normal" item in the menu on a regular would kill its novelty. that's what i feel anyways. if given the chance to try it again, i would but it's more of a thrill thing.

I havent tried it, but im pretty game for most of it. The hardest part would prolly be the organs, but i think the blood would go down fine. Snakes are supposedly good for you... i wouldnt know haha. People will eat anything i guess, which is why its a delicacy.
