... I'm not sure it's safe to assume who.

[she makes an interested sort of noise and stares up at the sky for a bit.]

... what makes you say that?

Nothing's ever what you assume around here.

If you've got any better theories for what happened ... I'm listening. I don't have anything better to do than think about it right now.

Who to accuse is obvious, but the circumstances are a little curious. They don't seem concerned in letting us see it.

Yeah.

It's a little strange, isn't it?

I saw a lot of villages torn apart because of a few people with power who weren't kept in check. They looked like this place usually does afterwards, too ... not just dead, but dessicated.

And it always happened so fast -- usually there was barely enough left over to piece together what happened to the place, much less what it used to be like before.

If we can just figure out what happened to them in the past, maybe we can figure out how to keep them from reenacting it with us in the present. I'm pretty sure that's the only chance we have of surviving long enough to get out of here voluntarily.

A good killer recognizes someone else's skill at work when she sees it.

You've killed people?

Of course. It's who I am.

I'm a shinobi! If I didn't kill others, I'd already be dead.

Is who the right question?

I think I'd rather know why. Why these people? They seem... normal enough for being illusionary.

..Ah! I don't think we've met. Name's Shay. And you are?

The "who" and "why" of murder are usually connected. One leads to the other, kinda like a red string.

Che! I never introduced myself either. Anko. Mitarashi Anko. Nice to meetcha, Shay-san.

Well... in the case of the earlier psycho running around... it was just a psycho, running around, killing people he'd never met, 's far as I know.

Likewise, Anko!

Lots of people kill other people without ever knowing anything about the people they've killed. But the reason they're killing is part of who they are.

Or maybe it was an accident that killed everyone. But y'know ... I really don't think that's what happened here.
