Is it really possible for people to change?

...I don't mean slightly but, a complete swap in a sense. Going from being cruel to kind or vice-versa.

Perfectly possible.

Of course, it's rarely the case that one is entirely cruel or entirely kind, simply that different facets are shown to different people. One rarely ever knows the true self.

The hard part is finding out what that core is.

That depends on how badly you want to change. If you are really determined it might go faster than if you were doing it halfheartedly.
