Don't Get Mad, Get Even

Unlike my other band mates, I'm not as upset about what happened at the Rock Band competition. There were four bands who were hotly contested (sorry to the other two, but you guys didn't have the fire, you know what I mean?), and only three of the were going to place. We were the ones who didn't ( Read more... )

The way they did Geek.Kon last year went like this: one round, all bands with all members on Medium, organizers chose the songs and eliminate half the bands. Rinse and repeat for Hard. Given the number of bands in the tourney, it left two bands for Expert. Oh, and only one song per band at each level, so it went quick. They got to pick the song they played (again, all members on the same difficulty). It worked out really well. My only complaint that we ended up hearing the same songs several times for Medium, but if you're picking the songs, you could pick several that are at about the same level. It also allows for sorting of several bands fairly quickly. I'd prefer that to weighted scoring, even with the fact that it would directly lower the ability of a band that I'm drumming for to make it to the end. Otherwise, I like these thoughts.

Hmm!

I do like weeding out the not-as-good bands early on. I don't like as much making a band who is intending to come out of the gate, guns blazing, playing a song they know on Medium. It's probably going to be very boring for them, and -- since the patterns are different -- almost paradoxically turn out that they perform WORSE. I don't want someone to lose out on a lower (unpracticed) difficulty level to a band they could have beaten at a harder level... as unlikely as that may be.

James is a friend, and for that reason I'm not afraid to tell him he fucked up this show and fucked over better bands who didn't make stupid mistakes.

I'm disappointed we didn't win, but Shnauzer Rocket out did every band in every turn and walked away in 2nd? Fuck that. I'd

So, Zac do we want to revive The Recession for Geek.kon, or oweing to Sean's involvment in the tourney, I wouldn't mind judging again. Obviously, it wouldn't be fair to do both. I really want to play again, but regardless, Sean, I'm at your disposal for any help you need with setup and equipment.

I don't think it would be fair to revive the band without all members! But if we got someone to replace Sean and thought up a new name I'd be game!

No that's totally cool. I just want to play, and I think we had a good thing going. So, we need another member, since Sean is running the contest. We've got time, we should practice up, maybe get some choreographed moves or something.

I pretty much agree with what you said, but in my review I do mention a much improved Recession from your last performance.

I had one more thought about Geek.Kon. If you are having subjective judging, for performance or whatever and not just the stars/score/percentages from the game, you should find people who aren't associate with any of the bands to do that. Either, it will look like you are favoring your friends if they win or you will look like you are judging your friends more harshly than everyone else to compensate if they lose. It's a no win proposition.

Impartial judging is important, as is getting interesting judges. WYOU tried for interesting, but ended up with annoying, but as far as I could tell, they were relatively impartial. Due to planning snafus and the random unconsciousness of the judging panel at No Brand, we had troubles on both fronts. The bulk ended up being judged by me (who was in a band that failed to finish a single song), Sean, and some guy from the audience who was also in a band at one point, and was subsequently switched to a different person when his band came up. Oh well. You definitely need to have a subjective judging portion to make the contest about the spirit of the game vs. who has too much time on their hands and plays contastly. A random videogame nerd can become perfect at the game, given enough time, but that doesn't mean they've ever rocked out, which I think is the reason this game exists.

Exactly. You can get 100% on Expert, but that doesn't mean you will look good doing it. But how do you judge who looks good? I would almost be tempted to try to snag cosplay judges for it, since the performance/stage presence aspects are similar enough that they would get it and would be less likely to be in a band/know the bands.

On the other side of the coin, I didn't like that 75% of your score in this contest was based on the judges. I thought it should be 50/50. I'm easily the least extroverted person in The Recession. That doesn't mean I don't get into the game, and forget I'm only pretending. I groove to it, and enjoy the act of playing, or I wouldn't be doing it. I am probably the most practiced in game in our band, though, and I think that should count for something. I don't know. I was very loose and had a blast ons tage this time, but during the prelims, I was terribly unable to get into the mode. Now I'm just rambling,a nd I have my own LJ for that.
