Brigid's Day

auntiemater and I will be hosting a Brigid celebration at our house on monday evening. This is the time of year that I feel most hopeful and most fearful.

Brigid has been the most important spiritual motivator for me for about 20 years now. I don't care if She is all in my mind, the inspiration that I feel working with Her is real. The bright, strong, wise ( Read more... )

I hope the defensive tone wasn't brought out by my recent post. A little back-story. In asking people what they wanted to know about atheism, three times people quoted, "there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

Think about that quote. It is a favorite thing for people to say to atheists, but what does it mean? It isn't nice. In fact, I call it "the unkindest quote of all." In the context of the play, and what people communicate by using it, is "I understand your view, you don't understand mine, and I'm superior to you for having this knowledge. I don't need to hear what you have to say, but you need to hear me."

Hopefully, you've never used that quote or had it used on you. It hurts to be treated that way.

Your posts about atheist talks caused me to think some more about my own experiences and beliefs. I was able to better express my understanding of my own process. The key point I was trying to make is that I realize that my own experiences are not DATA. They inform how I work with myself and others but don't extend to what might be right for anyone else.

I am very glad to know and love atheist and agnostics if only to break my sometimes circular thinking.

Your posts did not hurt or even change my thoughts about this, just allowed me to express them a little better.

Thanks.
