For our entire school-lives both Jackie and I had our first day of school the first Tuesday in September following Labour Day. This was without fail, etched in stone, never to be torn asunder. Of course, I can see the teacher's point. After all, Why Should He Miss The Opportunity To Know Where His Locker Is?

Finally: school always started the Tuesday after Labor Day (except for my crazy country cousins, for whom school started in August, but they were just damn out of luck, and lived in crazytown).

NEVER catch up? Wow, that's some learning they do in only one week! So even if he studies for the rest of his life, he'll never get that crucial secret information imparted in the first week of September.
Actually, next year, just send him for that week and give him the rest of the year off.
